a short story
it was friday around 3 pm, i had just finished work and i was home. rather than changing into comfortable clothes i sat on the couch wearing my slacks, nylons and blouse enjoying my pipe and eating some baker's semi sweet chocolate. suddenly there was a knock at the front door of the house. considering that i was only 1 tenant out of 4 in the house, i contemplated answering the knock. what were the odds of someone else answering the door? after realizing that i lived in a house full of deadbeats and no one else was home, it was up to me to respond. so i did.
there she was... a large manly looking woman who looked 5 times the strength of me. she asked to borrow my telephone after telling me about a predicament she was having with waiting for a ride (or something to that effect). i told her that was fine. i didn't think twice, well not until remembering that the only phone i had to offer was the one in my bedroom. the phone sitting next to my wallet, next to my camera and finally, next to my pipe that i had just hid away from my new house invader.
i walked her into my room, passed her the phone, and stood directly behind her waiting for her to finish. she was fast. i walked her back to the door, wished her well and closed the door behind her. i sat back down.
again, there was a knock. it was her.
she asked to borrow the phone again. this time, with my mind screaming "no" my voice blurted out "hmmm, i guess so". she walked passed me, entered my room in front of me, removed the pile of dirty laundry on my chair and placed it on my bed, sat down and took out an address book. she made her first call out of probably 8 that followed. i made sure to stand just outside my door so i could hear her voice and movements clearly. i heard her picking something up, i looked in and met eyes with hers and then looked down to my purse in her hands. she quickly looked at me, passed me the purse and then said sorry for having picked it up. she said "it was in her way".
i couldn't help but notice that none of the calls she had made that night were of any real importance. she was mostly calling friends making arrangements for the rest of her evening. i mean really... who does that??!!?
she asked me all sorts of questions regarding roommates, place of work, price of rent, monthly wages, etc. she walked around my apartment looking at my belongings all the while commenting on 'how she liked this and that'. my blood was boiling...
instead of throwing her out by her hair, i walked behind her sheepishly keeping my fingers crossed hoping that she wasn't going to hurt me and then rob me blind.
she left. i locked both my apartment door and the front door, turned off my lights and hid in my bedroom.
what kind of lion am i?
